Essential Items for Any Disaster Preparedness Kit

Posted by NMCL Employee on

In the wake of any type of emergency, from a one-night power outage to a major natural disaster, it is always a good idea to be prepared before the emergency strikes. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends having a disaster preparedness kit with the basic essentials. Items such as food, water, a first aid kit, and a radio are vital for short-term survival.

But What About Longer?

What if the emergency lasted longer than 2-3 days? The list FEMA provides is only designed to help you and your family survive for a few days. What if you need to subsist much longer than that? Could you live off the grid for 2-3 weeks instead of 2-3 days?

4 Little-Known Things for Your Disaster Preparedness Kit

Potassium Iodate Pills

  • When the human body is exposed to radiation, some of the radiation will be absorbed into the thyroid. If too much is absorbed, the thyroid can be damaged. The element potassium iodate is capable of shielding the thyroid from radioactive iodine, and allows the human body to safely expel the radioactive substance. This can be critical in protecting your thyroid from any radioactive iodine that may leak into your drinking water. Potassium Iodate is especially advantageous for people who live near nuclear power plants, or other areas that deal with radiation on a daily basis. Berkey® Potassium Iodate Tablets come in sealed bottles of ninety 85-mg tablets, or sixty 170 mg tablets. They are not government surplus and have a shelf life of ten years or longer.

Viral Mask

The best defense against airborne diseases when exposed to potentially contaminated air is a viral mask. Whether in the form of a biological outbreak, or a simple sneeze or cough, airborne bacteria and viruses are easily caught and are very difficult to avoid. Viral masks are an excellent shield against airborne pathogens and an important arsenal in your disaster preparedness Kit. Viral masks are fairly common in heavily polluted cities, and are often used to avoid contracting or spreading potential airborne ailments. The N-99 Virus Mask by Berkey® is a very effective means of protection from airborne contaminants. The mask is easy to wear, hypoallergenic, has 100 times the bacterial and viral protection of the standard N-95 mask, and lasts for up to eight hours.

Biofilm Protection

It is important to store extra water no matter where you live, or what kind of emergencies you may face. Over time, however, even water stored in large containers, such as rainwater stored in a 55 gallon drum, can lose freshness, and begin to collect bacteria. As part of a Disaster Preparedness Kit, biofilm drops provide an excellent means of protection from microorganisms growing within stored water, and can even extend the water’s shelf life. Berkey®’s Biofilm Drops use a patented Copper-Silver Ion solution to protect stored water from biofilm-based bacteria, are easy to use, and can extend the shelf life of stored water by up to five years.

A Berkey® Priming Pump

One of the most important aspects of disaster preparedness is not only that you have water, but that the water is clean and safe to drink. Berkey® systems are gravity-fed, portable, require no electricity, and are rated to remove pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, and even viruses from a water supply. The Black Berkey Primer™ is a great tool for priming each Black Berkey® Purification filter element when assembling the system, as well as purging air through the elements to quickly dry them for long term storage.
